Steel Studs vs. Wood Studs: Which Should You Frame With?

Steel framing used to be a commercial-only conversation. It is not anymore — interior partitions, shop finish-outs, and metal building interiors all show up at our counter framed in steel, and residential remodelers use it for basement and utility walls.
Neither material is universally better. What follows is the honest tradeoff on each point that actually affects a job.

Where steel clearly wins
- Interior non-load-bearing partitions — the straightness alone shows up in the finished wall.
- Commercial and office finish-out, where code and inspectors expect it.
- Metal building interiors, which is a large share of what we supply around Seminole.
- Wet or slab-level walls where rot is a real risk.
- Long, tall walls — steel stays flat where a 12 ft wood stud might crown.
Where wood still wins
- Load-bearing walls in ordinary residential construction.
- Anywhere heavy items get hung — cabinets, handrails, TV mounts — without pre-planned blocking.
- Crews with no steel experience: the learning curve is short but it is real, and a first steel job runs slower.
- Exterior walls where thermal bridging matters. Steel conducts heat, so steel-framed exterior walls need continuous exterior insulation to hit the same performance.
Reading a steel stud spec
Steel is called out by a four-part designation, and it pays to know how to read it. Something like 362S162-33 means 3-5/8 in. web, S for stud, 1-5/8 in. flange, 33 mil steel thickness.
For interior partitions, 25 gauge (18 mil) is standard non-structural material. Heavier 20 and 18 gauge get used where walls are tall, where something is being hung, or where the wall is doing structural work.
Track sizes have to match the stud web. Ordering 3-5/8 in. studs and 2-1/2 in. track is the single most common ordering mistake we see — tell us the wall thickness and we will match the set.
What about cost?
Straight material cost swings with the lumber and steel markets, so any fixed ratio quoted online goes stale fast. The more useful framing: steel prices are relatively stable, lumber is volatile, and on interior partitions the two are usually close enough that labor and straightness decide it.
Add in near-zero cull rate — you use essentially every stud in a steel bundle — and the delivered cost gap narrows further.

- Are steel studs cheaper than wood?
- It depends on the market at the time you buy. Steel prices are steadier; lumber swings. On interior partitions they are often close, and steel's near-zero waste rate closes much of the gap since you use every piece in the bundle.
- Can steel studs be load bearing?
- Yes, with structural-gauge studs and an engineered design. The light-gauge 25 ga material used for interior partitions is not structural. If the wall carries load, get it engineered and order the specified gauge.
- How do you hang a TV or cabinets on a steel stud wall?
- Plan blocking before the drywall goes up — flat strap or wood blocking between studs at mounting height. After the fact, heavy-duty toggle anchors will hold moderate loads, but blocking is the right answer for cabinets.
- What gauge steel stud do I need for an interior wall?
- 25 gauge (18 mil) handles standard-height non-load-bearing partitions. Step up to 20 gauge for tall walls, walls carrying cabinets or fixtures, or where the specification calls for it.
