How Much Drywall Do I Need?

6 min read · Updated 2026

There are two ways to get a drywall count wrong: under-order and shut the crew down mid-hang, or over-order and eat sheets that warp in the garage. The method below gets you close enough that neither happens.

Bring your numbers to the counter and we will check them against the plan before anything gets loaded.

Step 1 — Get your square footage

Measure each wall's length and multiply by ceiling height. Add ceilings by multiplying room length by width. Add it all up per room, then total the house.

Do not subtract for doors and windows unless you have a lot of glass. Those cutouts create waste, not savings — the offcut from around a window rarely fits anywhere useful.

Quick sanity check: a typical single-story house runs roughly 3.5 times its floor square footage in drywall. A 2,000 sq ft house lands near 7,000 sq ft of board.

Step 2 — Convert to sheets

Divide total square footage by the coverage of the sheet you are hanging, then add waste.

Sheet sizeCoverageSheets per 1,000 sq ft
4 x 832 sq ft32
4 x 1040 sq ft25
4 x 1248 sq ft21
  • New construction, simple layout: add 10% waste.
  • Remodel, cut-up rooms, lots of openings: add 15%.
  • Vaulted or angled ceilings: add 20% — the cuts are unforgiving.

Step 3 — Mud, tape and screws

Finishing material scales with sheet count, not square footage, because most of the work is at the joints.

MaterialRule of thumbPer 100 sheets (4x8)
All-purpose joint compoundAbout 1 gal per 100 sq ft of board~ 8 to 10 five-gallon buckets
Paper or mesh tapeAbout 370 ft per 1,000 sq ft~ 1,200 ft
Drywall screws~32 per sheet on walls, more on ceilings~ 25 lb bucket
Corner beadOne piece per outside cornerCount corners off the plan

Step 4 — Split the order by board type

Once you have a sheet count, break it out: moisture-resistant for bathrooms and laundry, Type X for the garage separation and any rated wall, regular everywhere else. Ordering it split saves the crew from sorting a mixed stack on the ground.

Worked example: 1,800 sq ft house

Walls and ceilings measured out to 6,400 sq ft of board. Hanging 4x12 sheets: 6,400 / 48 = 134 sheets. Add 10% for new construction = 148 sheets. Of those, 14 are moisture-resistant for two baths and the laundry, and 12 are Type X for the garage.

Finishing: about 13 five-gallon buckets of all-purpose, roughly 2,400 ft of tape, two 25 lb buckets of screws, and corner bead counted off the plan.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How many sheets of drywall for a 12x12 room?
With 8 ft ceilings: 384 sq ft of wall plus 144 sq ft of ceiling equals 528 sq ft. That is about 17 sheets of 4x8 or 11 sheets of 4x12 before waste — call it 19 and 13 with a 10% factor.
Should I subtract windows and doors from my drywall count?
Generally no. The board you cut out of an opening seldom fits anywhere else, so those cutouts become waste rather than savings. On a wall that is mostly glass, subtract the opening and then add the waste factor back.
How much joint compound do I need per sheet?
Budget roughly a gallon of all-purpose compound for every 100 sq ft of board — about one five-gallon bucket per 10 to 12 sheets of 4x12, depending on how heavy your finisher runs it and what level finish is specified.
Can A&P figure the drywall count from my plans?
Yes. Send us the plans and our takeoff service will return a sheet count split by board type plus the finishing materials, priced and ready to schedule for delivery.
